Ordinary people will go to Miyagi Zao Fox Village near here, but countryside lovers can’t pass Yokokawa Valley and Chourou Lake which are located on the foot of Mt.Zao.

The name of Zao comes from the fact that Zao Gongen, mountain religion,  was separated from the Kinpusenji Temple in Yoshino, Nara, where cherry blossoms bloom all over the mountain.  Before then, a part of the predecessor of this Zao name was called Mt. Fubousan, now which can be seen well from Yokokawa Valley and Chourou Lake.  It is a mountain that has appeared in Japanese classics, and it means a mountain that you never forget in literary.

The idyllic view of Chourou Lake and the view of Mt. Fubousan from the longest suspension bridge in Tohoku will be a memory you will never forget.

Lake Towada at twillight

towada lake from Hakka pass

Lake Towada  is not far behind from Mt.Aso (in Kumamoto prefecture) as ‘Caldera Topography’.    In the past, the subduction of the Pacific plate produced magma and many giant caldera volcanoes existed.   The Caldera outer ring mountain is huge so always I’m wondering which mountain pass to choose as a panoramic view point.
Hakka Pass is too famous and you can find delicious apples, etc. with cheap price at the souvenir shop there but “Kankodai” is very calm especially at twillight.

We have visit Lake Towada even twice searching for nice weather.  On the other hand we had also visit Mt.Aso even twice !   We never get tired of watching the caldera terrain.

Lake Tazawa which looks like a tropical beach is mysterious

blue gradation

It is uncertain that Lake Tazawa is the site of a caldera volcano.   However, the lake is surrounded by outer ring mountains at the same altitude, but the bottom of the lake is lower than the sea level.   It means that the bottom of the lake is the same or more deep from the surface of the lake to the height of outer ring mountains.   It is a mystery where the volcanic product of such a volume were accumulated, so it has not ever been confirmed that Lake Tazawa came from caldera volcano or not.

The lake is so acidic that few fish live in it by drawing in the strong acidic hot spring water artificially.  The moment the young girl realized her beauty, she realized that she would grow older.   The water of the fountain that she drank according to a message from God to keep her good looks turned her into a dragon, from which the name of Lake Tazawa came.   I was convinced by this legend when I looked at the lake that showed the mysterious blue gradation.
